Create a Web Site or Page – How much does it cost to get started?
“In Lady Windemere’s Fan, Oscar Wilde had Lord Darlington quip that a cynic was ‘a man who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing.‘ As with so much of what Wilde wrote or said, it’s more than just a nice turn of phrase – it hits at the heart of the problems of society.” (Full text and discussion here)
The price of something you are looking to buy is important. There is no way around it. Is the price the most important thing? You need a general price so that you know if you should create a web site for your business, right? Sure you do. Yet before getting too cynical on this business need, make sure you also figure out the value TO your business. How many people will do business with you if you have a web site? How many people will skip over your business if you DO NOT have a web site?
So, what are you wanting to accomplish and can you come up with a monthly budget for your business? So let’s hold off on talking so much about price until you can figure out the VALUE of a web site to your business. Take some time to figure out what you actually want a web site to do for you. We know, however, that price is a very important part of any business purchase. Also, if a person calls your business, what is that call usually worth? $100 US?
So, let’s put a value on a call to your business. This would be related to the value of a call which results in a sale. Suppose your newly created web site could increase calls to your business by 2 extra calls per month. Would this have value to you?
To get started, prices vary and depend, again, on what you want your web site to do for you. If you have a complicated business that requires web page updates on a weekly basis, it can cost more. We’ve done work for as little as $300 and for as much as $12,000. As you can imagine, the more you spend on the project the better the result — or it should be. To get a basic understanding of the parts of a web site, view our overview of the parts of a web site here.
Do you want a site that is tailored specifically to your needs and wants (i.e., a custom site)? Like custom carpentry, it usually adds cost but looks better.
Do you want a site quickly or for as little cost as possible? Speed and choosing the ‘off the shelf’ version can save you time, money and get your web site created quickly.
Do you expect to be found by a search engine or is your site just for ‘show’ (i.e., you will inform your clients of your web site name in your marketing material)?
We have seen that people see the setup of a web site as something similar to something you would do in your home as a home repair activity. If they do it themselves, it will save money and be a great solution. Not always the case with home repair though — and not always the case with your web site or web page.
You can create a web site or web page through many companies and ways. Godaddy and many other companies offer web site ‘templates’. Wordpress has many options. The list goes on and on. WIX.COM is popular. Look around and see how far you get. We will act as your project manager if that helps you get to where you want to go. Contact Us to talk more about options that will best suit you.
If you are in the do-it-yourself category, we applaud you. If you want us to help, we are ready and waiting for your call.
